Personal Flotation Device (PFD) Requirements

All contestants (and volunteers) inside the tow tank carriage rails (on longitudinal sides of the tank) MUST wear a United States Coast Guard Approved Type I, II, III, or Type V Personal Flotation Device (PFD) that is in good serviceable condition and appropriately sized for the intended user. This includes those team members walking and towing their subs back after a race.

Contestants in wet suits are not required to wear PFDs.

Aluminum High Pressure Air Tanks

There has been a lot of mail and discussion on the subject of aluminum air tanks. The concern is safety. The "US NAVY Diving Guidelines for the DTMB" has been recently revised to state:

Tank Fills

"The U.S. Navy will be providing air fills at the races. Please bring your tanks over to fill station and either wait for them to be filled or drop them off and pick them up later. Any aluminum cylinder made of 6351-T6 aluminum alloy must be inspected following current Dept of Transportation regulations that includes a combined visual / eddy current annual inspection and be so marked on each cylinder. Note that the Navy divers will inspect each tank to make sure it has a current hydro and visual inspection and those in compliance will receive a special sticker so that they do not need to be re-inspected for each fill. Tanks that fail to have a current hydro and visual inspection will not be filled. In addition, the Navy will not fill any of the following tanks manufactured (original hydro) in 1982 with DOT designations that include SP6688, E6688, SP6576, SP7039, E7235 in the body of the DOT permit number. This is due to potential material problems with these tanks."

In particular, double check all aluminum tanks fabricated (first hydro date) before 1990.

The present consensus is that at ISR #10, these vintage of aluminum air tanks will not be allowed.
